Aloha ! Mabuhay !
2005

While exploring and photographing the abandoned Lihue Mill in 2005, I stumbled across this notice, posted the week the mill closed. The experience of exploring the three closed mills on Kauai (Koloa and Kekaha were the other two) was what lead to my obsession with Hawaiian sugar as a subject and eventually to shooting the project "Pau Hana Time" at Gay & Robinson, which still operated the last sugar plantation on Kauai at the time. With the recent closing of HC&S on Maui, there have been many touching eulogies for the Hawaiian sugar industry, but none has had such a profound effect on me as this simple notice by Bango #1705, which provided the title for this body of work. - KP
